Hot take I loathe The Clash. You cannot trust my opinion because I believe the same thing about The Beatles. Nickleback and Led Zeppelin are the same band, but different eras. I could go on all night.

If we are talking late 70's, early 80's:
Misfits, Minor Threat, Circle Jerks, Black Flag (Keith Morris), Descendents, Agent Orange, The Weirdos
Other than that.....
Good Riddance, Ten Foot Pole, Face to Face, 30 Foot Fall, AFI (pre 2002), DI, Operation Ivy, Masked Intruder, Plague Vendor, and maybe a little Rocket from the Crypt.
As far as hip hop goes, I have been stuck listening to Death Grips. I’ve just been shuffling all their songs available on Spotify. It’s probably not for everyone. The first cassette that I bought was Sir Mix-a-lot’s Swass, so like I said my critical opinion shouldn’t count. It’s just hard to pass up musical snobbery opportunities.

You don’t usually see names like Circle Jerk and Plague Vendor when someone is trying to be snobbish about music, but the fact that you put “pre [certain year]” after a band proves you are haha.
